Hyosung's Automotive Solutions

Since Karl Benz's gasoline car in 1886, the automotive industry has been striving for stronger performance, convenience, safety, and efficient fuel consumption. However, in the modern era, the automotive industry has stepped into a completely different realm of technology called "eco-friendly energy. Various companies are trying to develop cars that use different types of eco-friendly energy, ranging from hybrid cars that use electricity as an assist, electric cars that rely entirely on electric power, to hydrogen cars that come closest to eco-friendly energy. It's not limited to electricity as the sole energy source. Many components in cars inevitably generate carbon emissions during the repair and disposal process, leading to environmental pollution. On the other hand, Hyosung proposes sustainable automotive solutions by applying new materials to these car components.

Introducing Hyosung and its technological expertise in automotive to safeguard our Earth's environment. With our strong technological capabilities, we strive to contribute to a greener automotive industry and a healthier Earth.

With the launch of Lyocell tire cords made from wood cellulose and industrial-grade Bio-PET fibers derived from plant-based Bio-EG, we’re expanding our low-carbon, environmentally friendly tire cord portfolio.

3)    Development of Reduced-Hazard Mixture Solution

To reduce the use of hazardous chemicals that inevitably occur during the process, Hyosung Advanced Materials has developed a mixture solution that extends tire lifespan and contributes to reducing waste tires. This solution does not involve the use of toxic Formalin and incorporates technology to enhance inner liner durability.

4)    Development and Application of Recycled Yarn

Hyosung Advanced Materials, the first in Korea to develop nylon 66 and polyester yarn for airbags, maintains the leading market share in the field. In response to the eco-friendly demands of the current era, Hyosung has made various efforts to develop Recycled Yarn, obtain GRS (Global Recycled Standard) certification, and apply it to their products.

5)    Improving the Marine Environment through Mechanical and Chemical Recycling Methods

Hyosung Advanced Materials utilizes a process called Mechanical Recycle to produce PET using a combination of sorted and compressed waste plastics, known as flakes, which are then transformed into recycled polyester regen yarn. This approach allows for the recovery and recycling of discarded plastics, producing eco-friendly fibers and manufacturing recycled PET tire cords for environmentally friendly seat belts, airbags, and sewing thread products.

Another method is Chemical Recycle, which involves the depolymerizing of discarded fishing nets collected from the ocean to create 100% recycled nylon material. The goal of Hyosung is to establish a model of resource circulation through this process in order to achieve the recycling of waste and the improvement of the marine environment.

6)    Development of Vehicle Floor Mats using Recycled BCF (Bulked Continuous Filament)

Hyosung Advanced Materials is expanding its portfolio of eco-friendly products by utilizing waste materials from fishing nets, extrusion process waste, and recycled chip suppliers. The ultimate goal is to produce car floor mats that are 100% recyclable by using a Recycled PET/NY Chip.

By sorting and compressing mixed waste plastics into flakes, Hyosung Advanced Materials is able to produce PET floor mats and nylon floor mats using depolymerized recycled nylon from discarded fishing nets. Additionally, efforts are being made to replace existing backing materials with recyclable alternatives. Through these initiatives, Hyosung Advanced Materials has achieved a reduction of 64.3% in greenhouse gas emissions for recycled products compared to conventional products and a 28% reduction for chemically recycled products.

Plastic is used without much thought, it does not naturally decompose and instead becomes microplastics that flow into the ocean. Millions of tons of microplastics flow inti the ocean, harming marine life and eventually causing human diseases. Hyosung Chemical is making various efforts to transform this plastic into an environmentally friendly alternative.
